Minnesota Youth Rugby is pleased to announce the appointments of the 2017 high school select side coaches. The application process saw a record number of coaching applicants compete for selection to work with the best Minnesota High School Rugby players. The select sides are Minnesota Youth Rugby's all star teams. They will compete in a USA Rugby regional cup tournament in June.

Ashley Loftus has been selected as the head coach of the Girls Select Side. Ashley is currently coaching Minnetonka Girls Rugby. The program has enjoyed success and has expanded to include a middle school team. She has a wealth of experience, including representing the United States Marine Corps in competition.

Rob Thoresen has been selected as the head coach of the Boys Select Side. Rob currently coaches Edina Boys Rugby. He got his start coaching with Winona Women's Rugby and also has experience as a player on multiple levels of Midwest rugby to complement his experience as a coach.

Ashley and Rob have an exciting group of up and coming assistant coaches to help prepare the selects. This group of coaches have shown they are looking to raise the level of play at their own programs and want to be at the forefront of raising the level throughout the state.

The assistant coaches are:

Alisha Berg (South River Heat)

Hanah Demars (Faribault)

Hannah Kirkman (Armstrong)

James Driessen (Rochester)

Bayert Salverda (Southside)

Chris Edwards (South River)

Eric Salverda and Jimmy Hanson will be working with the coaches as program consultants. They will help scout players and support the staff using their experience as past select side coaches.

Although the teams will be competing individually, the staff is working together to select the best teams possible and prepare them. All players in the high school league are encouraged to attend at least one of the two open tryouts. Players will continue to be scouted during the remaining weeks of the season that may also result in an invitation to compete for a spot on one of the teams.

Further information regarding training schedule, fundraising, and competition will be released later this week and to all athletes at the tryouts.

MYR would also like to thank Eric Curtin and Adam Dilley for offering the use of their clubs fields for the tryout.

Tryout information can be found here
